We share the building with Chelsea Vocational High School located on the 2nd and 3rd floorsįounded in 2008, the NYC iSchool is the first school opened under the New York City Department of Education’s 21st Century Schools Initiative.
The NYC-iSchool is a public high school located on the 4th and 5th floors of an historic school building in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. This directly relates to the exterior meeting space with a specially designed trellis composed of specially calibrated light ‘foils’ that selectively shade and project occupants from glare. The Greenhouse is the primary interior space, with a classroom/conference room component.The intersections that form each ’zone’ of this matrix create a patchwork of different environments that address a full range of possible growing conditions, plant species differentiation, housing of animal biodiversity, and variation in spaces for the use of students and faculty.

Now we are going to build it – and we will be needing everyone’s help and support. More than 300 students have worked on the project for four years. New York City High School Students have designed an ecologically and educationally excellent Green Roof for our historic school building. Each year since its opening, the school has added approximately 120 new ninth graders the school is now at capacity with approximately 470 students and occupies the fourth and fifth floors of its current building.ĭespite the challenge of acceptance to the school (the school receives about 4000 applications each year for 120 spots), the iSchool has attracted and admitted a remarkably diverse student body, with students coming to the school from all five boroughs of New York City, some traveling over an hour and a half to attend the school each day. The iSchool shares its space with another DOE high school and operates within the same policies and regulations of any NYC public high school. 
The iSchool opened its doors in September 2008 with 100 ninth grade students on part of the fifth floor of a 100-plus-year-old school building in the SoHo area of Manhattan.
